THE C.R. SANDIDGE WINES
2023 Purtteman White
White Blend
What a beautiful comeback weather wise for Washington State the 2023 growing season represented. Excellent growing conditions existed from bud – break in April through the fourth week of October. So perfect was the growing season that the only job a winemaker had going forward was not to fumble what nature and our vineyard provided.
The harvest for this rare C R Sandidge white wine blend came from two vineyard sites. Our Purtteman Estate vineyard provided small Gewurztraminer berries packed with exotic flavors and modest acidity. Five percent Mourvedre from the Granite Rock vineyard was pressed and fermented together into the final wine.
The Purtteman vineyard lies in the heart of the Lake Chelan AVA. Nestled up into a 14 acre half – amphitheater like earthen bowl at an elevation of 1,650 above sea level, our estate Gewurztraminer vines absolutely love their home. The Purtteman terrior is ideal for this Alsace native. The granitic – glacial soils possess just the right amount of cobble, sand, loam and organic matter. Starting approximately 3 – 4 feet below the soil surface, a deep glacial cobble is found reaching down about 20 feet. This makes for excellent water drainage away from the vine roots. The specific site – Gewurztraminer aspect is facing northeast on a modest slope. The Granite Rock vineyard Mourvedre is grown is the slightly warmer Rocky Reach AVA which is located in the Columbia river valley opposite the town of Chelan Falls. It faces due west. The vines thrive in the glacial cobble found at the soil surface down to about 8 – 12 feet.
-
Harvest: All fruit was hand-picked, sorted and gently whole cluster pressed using our state of the art pneumatic press.
-
Fermentation: The juice was cold settled 3 days and then racked to another jacketed stainless steel tank. Once the juice temperature warmed to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, a yeast developed in northern France was utilized for the primary fermentation. The fermentation was purposely slow lasting 28 days coasting along between 55 and 60 degrees.
-
No malo – lactic conversion was permitted as we desired the malic acid remain in the final wine. This helped provide the excellent – crisp presentation our 2023 Purtteman White possesses.
-
Filtration Level: Very tight at bottling.
The quality of this vintage’s grapes was nothing short of superb. Our estate Gewurztraminer grapes provided lovely nectarine – peach, jasmine and wet stone notes while the Mourvedre added a slight ripe strawberry note and some additional acidity. The sugar – acid balance is perfect for a food wine. Purtteman White should be served cool to cold. Doing so will make for an excellent match with several of the cheeses we offer. Namely, Comte, Blumenkase or Delice de Bourgoune. We also find it pairs very well with baked cod or halibut when served with a white wine sauce. Our family thanks you for your friendship and support. Enjoy!!
