The 2020 vintage was a growing season rating an amazing 8.5 edging towards 9.0 on a scale of 0 to 10. Early – spring and summer weather was almost ideal. The only real wrinkle was when arsonists north of Chelan decided to start several forest fires. Ash plumbs flowing south – southwest towards the Lake Chelan valley missed the vineyards located north of Lake Chelan.

Our 2020 Whistle Punk was grown exclusively in the Native River vineyard. This vineyard is situated on the west bank of the Columbia River just south of the Azwell Dam in Chelan county. The soils are loamy sand with large grapefruit sized round rock which obviously are the result of the Columbia river depositing said soils there.

* Harvest: All fruit was hand-picked, sorted and destemmed – crushed into a one ton fermentation bin.
* Fermentation: A yeast developed in northern France was utilized for the primary fermentation. The must fermented for 9 days on the skins prior to pressing.
* Malo-lactic conversion: Malo – lactic conversion was fully completed while the wine was in barrels utilizing the native bacteria.
* The wine was aged for 21 months in French oak barrels. The French oak forest we sourced was “Center of France”.
* Filtration Level: Very tight at bottling.

The Wine

Our 2020 Whistle Punk is a superb – very well balanced red wine. Very dark purple color, flavors and aromas of vanilla bean – graham cracker barrel notes compliment the grape notes beautifully. Ripe black cherries plus purple plums complete the flavor and aroma profile. Whistle Punk is not only a great food wine, a glass of it finishes your days work perfectly. Match with homemade burgers, stews centered around beef or lamb or a savory eggplant Parmesan.
