The 2020 vintage was a growing season rating an amazing 8.5 edging towards 9.0 on a scale of 0 to 10. Early – spring and summer weather was almost ideal. The only real wrinkle was when arsonists north of Chelan decided to start several forest fires. Ash plumbs flowing south – southwest towards the Lake Chelan valley miraculously missed our Purtteman estate vineyard!

Our 2020 Tannat represents the second harvest of this rare and highly sought after red wine. It hails from our Purtteman estate vineyard which is located in the Lake Chelan AVA. Small berries packed with dark purple color, black fruit and red berry flavors and aromas provided the generous backbone of this fine wine. Our effort is to produce small crops full of flavor, tannin and color rich berries. The process begins with pruning and continues throughout the growing season where we carefully monitor the water and nutrition needs of each vine. This attention to detail and the passion to follow through make all the difference between our estate grown wines and grapes grown for larger wineries.

  • Harvest: All fruit was hand-picked, sorted and destemmed – crushed into a one ton fermentation bin.
  • Fermentation: A yeast developed in northern France was utilized for the primary fermentation. The must fermented for 8 days on the skins prior to pressing.
  • Malo-lactic conversion: Malo – lactic conversion was fully completed while the wine was in barrels utilizing the native bacteria.
  • The wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. The French oak forest we sourced was “Center of France”.
  • Filtration Level: Very tight at bottling.

Our 2020 Tannat is a superb followup to the heralded 2019 rendition. Very dark purple color, flavors and aromas of vanilla bean – graham cracker barrel notes abound. Ripe black and red raspberry plus black cherries complete the flavor and aroma profile. Tannat is a great food wine. Match with a wild mushroom saute and chewy artisan bread or a beef fillet served with a delicious herb – blue cheese – butter sauce.
