The 2019 vintage was a growing season rating an amazing 9.0 on a scale of 0 to 10…………. until early the second week of September.  Temperatures plunged to near freezing which almost shut down the ripening process.  Grape growers not hanging excess amounts of fruit were eventually able to fully ripen come late – September and October.  All in all, 2019 was a manageable growing season.  Winemakers needed to pull some rabbits out of the hat.

The Syrah and Petite Sirah fruit for this delicious red wine came from the Native River vineyard.  This excellent site is located on a sandy – rocky shoulder along the west bank of the Columbia River about 6 miles north of Chelan.  The vines are oriented slightly to the southwest – northeast.  This vineyard ripens approximately seven days earlier than the Lake Chelan valley.

  • Harvest:  All fruit was hand-picked, sorted and destemmed – crushed into one ton fermentation bins.
  • Fermentation:  A yeast developed in northern California was utilized for the primary fermentation.  The various musts were fermented for 7 days on the skins prior to pressing.  
  • Malo-lactic Conversion:  Malo – lactic conversion was fully completed while the wine was in barrel.
  • The wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barrel.  The French oak forest we sourced was “Center of France”.  
  • Filtration Level:  Very tight at bottling.

The combination of Native River fruit and our winemaking hit this one out of the park once again.  Deep dark purple color pours from the bottle to your glass.  Flavors and aromas of ripe red and black plums, blueberries, blackberries along with very slight nuances of clove and nutmeg fill the flavor and aroma profile.  The French oak barrels added some delicious coffee – graham cracker notes as well.  This wine possesses superb structure fluctuating between silky and firm.
