2019 Tannat

Tannat 100%

The 2019 vintage was a growing season rating an amazing 9.0 on a scale of 0 to 10…………. until early the second week of September.  Temperatures plunged to near freezing which almost shut down the ripening process.  Grape growers not hanging excess amounts of fruit were eventually able to fully ripen come late – September and October.  All in all, 2019 was a manageable growing season.  Winemakers needed to pull some rabbits out of the hat.

The Tannat fruit for this incredible red wine came from our estate Purtteman vineyard.  Small tannin rich berries brimming with deep dark purple color and massive ripe raspberry – concentrated blueberry/blackberry flavors and aromas provided the generous backbone of this fine wine.  The potential of our Purtteman estate vineyard is showcased exceptionally well with this first ever north central Washington Tannat.

  • Harvest:  All fruit was hand-picked, sorted and destemmed – crushed into one ton fermentation bins.

  • Fermentation:  A yeast developed in northern California was utilized for the primary fermentation.  The various musts were fermented for 7 days on the skins prior to pressing.

  • Malo-lactic Conversion:  Malo – lactic conversion was fully completed while the wine was in barrel.

  • The wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barrel.  The French oak forest we sourced was “Center of France”.

  • Filtration Level:  Very tight at bottling.

I am overjoyed with the quality this fine wine provided Athena and I. Our 2019 Tannat is a wine which is a BIG – POWERFUL statement wine.  Flavors and aromas of ultra ripe red raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and black currants fill the flavor and aroma profile.  The French oak barrel added some delicious coffee – graham cracker notes as well.  This wine possesses chewy – complex tannins which shall provide additional drinking pleasure for quite some time.  This wine is capable of aging a solid 20 years.  I recommend cellaring this wine until 2024 prior to opening.  We thank-you for your friendship and support.  Enjoy!!
